Tulip Story in My Garden: Types and Seed Propagation

Last November, I planted various kinds of tulip bulbs in my garden.
Planting just a few wouldn't have been enough to fill the space, so I eagerly prepared plenty.
I even dreamed of doing some flower arrangements, but realistically, that journey might take a few more years.

Still, watching each tulip bloom one by one has been more than rewarding.
Today, I'd like to introduce the tulips that have brightened my garden, and also share how to propagate tulips from seeds.

Types of Tulips Blooming in My Garden

1. Yellow Double Tulip

One of the tulips that caught the most attention this year was the yellow double tulip.
With its multiple layers of petals, it looked almost like a soft yellow rose, full and luxurious.
As a type of Double Tulip, it brought a warm, sunlit feeling to the entire garden.

This particular yellow tulip appears to be the Monte Carlo variety, known for its vibrant and cheerful color that instantly brightens up any space.

2. Red Single Tulip

In another corner of the garden, a vivid red tulip stood out.
This tulip belongs to the Triumph Tulip group, known for its neat, classic petal shape and rich color.
A slight black marking in the center adds a sophisticated touch.

Triumph tulips are sturdy and wind-resistant, making them an excellent choice even for beginner gardeners.

3. Purple Happy Feet Tulip

I also planted two bulbs of the purple Happy Feet single tulip.
However, only one managed to sprout this year.
Summer's humidity can be tough on tulips, so I’m hoping it will survive through the upcoming season.

Realistically, tulips are flowers that we usually purchase new bulbs for each year.
Most tend to struggle or die during the hot summer months.
While all plants are somewhat vulnerable during this time, I can only hope for the best this year.

I'll just keep quietly watching and cheering them on —
"I'll be here, keeping an eye on you~~!"

How to Propagate Tulips from Seeds

Although tulips are usually propagated from bulbs, it's also possible to grow them from seeds.
However, it’s important to know that growing tulips from seeds takes 3 to 5 years before they will bloom.
If you are patient and love watching slow, steady growth, trying seed propagation could be a meaningful experience.

Steps to Grow Tulips from Seeds

  1. Collecting Seeds
After the flowers fade, seed pods naturally form.
Leave them on the plant until they dry completely, then collect the seeds.

  2. Storing Seeds
If you’re not planting them immediately, store the seeds in a dry, cool place.
Adding a paper towel inside a sealed container helps absorb excess moisture.

  3. Best Time to Sow
Fall (September to October) is the best time for sowing.
Tulip seeds need to experience winter cold to break dormancy.

  4. Planting the Seeds
Use well-draining soil, lightly cover the seeds with about 1 cm of soil, and water gently.
Avoid soaking the soil too much.

  5. Winter Stratification
Either leave the planted seeds outdoors through winter, or simulate winter conditions by placing them in a refrigerator for 6 to 8 weeks.

  6. Germination and Growth
Tiny sprouts will emerge the following spring, but it will take several more years of care before the tulips are mature enough to bloom.

Final Thoughts

Growing tulips from seeds isn't about getting fast results; it's about cherishing every small moment of growth.
Someday, I hope to see a garden full of tulips I’ve raised from seeds.

That said...
Let’s be honest — bulbs are way easier! 😄
Since growing from seeds takes so long, we're happily sticking to bulbs for now~~!

If you're feeling adventurous, though, why not try tulip seed propagation this year? 🌷
